The Spanish Civil War (1936-39) is one of the wars in which the losers are documented much more than the winners. The ideological spectrum of the socialist Republican side of the war has been explored inside out, but their opponents, General Francisco Franco's Nationalists are portrayed simplistically as reactionaries, who merely represented the interests of the Church and powerful landowners, and wanted to return Spanish society to feudal times.

The controversy surrounding the death of a Lanarkshire political activist who fought in the Spanish civil war has been revisited in a new book. Bob Smillie, grandson of the county miners’ leader and Labour MP of the same name died in June 1937. Academic Daniel Gray devotes a chapter of his work Homage to Caledonia - which looks at the role Scots played in the conflict - to the 20-year-old from Larkhall.

Jewish communists comprised the largest faction of Stalin’s International Brigade which agitated and participated in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. Stalin’s International Brigade, comprised mostly of Jews, slaughtered 6,539 Spanish priests, 3000 monks, 300 nuns, and 13 Bishops. Over 20,000 Spanish churches were destroyed by the Bolshevik Jews.

The victory of Franco was not a foregone conclusion. It is a fact which is not generally realised that the Spanish ruling class, having embarked on the course of civil war came within an inch of losing everything. The Spanish workers could undoubtedly have smashed the fascists - as they succeeded in doing in Catalonia - and set about the task of transforming society on one condition -that the workers' leaders would have had a revolutionary policy.
